ABOUT THE BOOK

On August 21, 1983, Ninoy Aquino returned from a three-year exile to continue his incarceration as a political prisoner, and, it was widely held, to discuss terms of reconciliation with the government that sent him to prison. Minutes after his arrival, he was shot in the head in broad daylight, just as he was being escorted out of the aircraft.

The chaotic and singular circumstances of his assassination and the investigations that followed, compounded by the political and economic turmoil of the time, have made the assassination of Ninoy the greatest lingering murder mystery in our country's history.

Ninoy's death was an ending he himself had foretold, in his many interviews and conversations with journalists and friends prior to his return. But perhaps what he could not have predicted was what it would give rise to: a clamor for justice and change that would soon sweep the nation.

This book gathers personal recollections and impressions of individuals who were there when it happened, whether they were home or away, whether they were politically allied or opposed, or indifferent.

The mystery of the Aquino assassination remains usolved. Perhaps it will never be solved. But the collective experience of Ninoy's death, and of his public and colorful life before it, remains.
